Welcome back to the Lovely Things series on Life as Kait!
So, unfortunately my summer is winding down and I am due back at my day job next week. I have decided to slow things back down a bit in order to maintain my sanity and develop high-quality posts for my readers. As a teacher, I read and write all the live long day… so, blogging is definitely going to be an extra plate thrown into the mix. I am looking forward to the challenge and I am excited for what the future is going to hold!
Today, I’d love to share my favorite things from this past August:
John Mayer Concert
My older brother, Ryan, and I attended John Mayer’s recent concert at Jones Beach, New York a week ago. Wow… he blew us away! To be honest, four years ago we saw John perform on his Born & Raised tour and I was not too impressed. It was strange. He seemed disconnected from the audience, his music was a little too folky, and he was missing two major pieces… bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan.
This time, John did not make that mistake. When John, Pino, and Steve get together, they make up the John Mayer Trio Band. It is absolute ::magic:: when they are on stage together. Thank goodness this was an anniversary tour because Ryan and I were privileged to hear his older pieces of art from Where the Light Is, Battle Studies, Heavier Things, Room For Squares, and Inside Wants Out. We’d LOVE for him to get back to his roots because his new music does not light us up as much.
When I think about it, it blows me away that John has been making music since 1999. He is an absolute GENUIS! When they performed on stage during this concert I had chills the entire time. I found myself closing my eyes and just soaking in the rhythm and lyrics from The Trio. It was also special to share this memory with my brother since he lives 9 hours away from me. Music has always connected us throughout the years and I know it will continue to in the future.
Listen below to my brother’s video of “Good Love Is On The Way” from the concert. Gives me CHILLS!
I am an extrovert and love meeting new people. It is easy for me to just walk up to someone and start a conversation, which I know can be uncomfortable for many others. But, I must be honest… I was a little nervous on my four hour drive to the Jersey Shore to meet three bloggers I really only knew through the digital world. I felt like I was going against all the safety lessons my parents taught me about strangers (haha).
But, for real, the experience was fantastic and something that I am going to continue to be very open to in the future. In Wildwood, New Jersey I took a little weekend getaway with Sheila from In Search of Sheila, Kristen from A Classy Fashionista, and Summer from Coffee with Summer. We all admitted that we were a little nervous to meet up. But, within an hour we were all chatting about anything from blogging, to music, to our relationships like we have known each other for years. I know that is not always typical when you meet strangers, so I am truly blessed to have been a part of this experience.
I am looking forward to more experiences like this in the future. It’s important for me to make these connections because I do not have anyone in my immediate circle that truly understands what the heck I am doing in this blogging world. Bloggers really do need other bloggers because all humans truly want is to be understood, to feel accepted, and to find a purpose in the world.
Thanks to Summer, Kristen, and Sheila, I am now feeling more comfortable in the blogging scene and truly understand the message behind #communityovercompetition.
If you are a blogger in the New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania area, be sure to join our blogger meet-up Facebook group here! There are many more adventures to join in on in the future.
If you have read my other Lovely Things posts, you know that I am a TV addict and loveeeeeee my shows. Here are the recent few I have been enjoying this August:
Yes! I have been waiting for MTV to come out with a Laguna Beach copycat for years! I’m pretty sure I rewatched Laguna Beach about four times since it aired back when I was in high school. Siesta Key has grown on me fast and I am definitely excited every time I see it appear in my DVR list.
I must say I do love the drama and the scenery throughout the entire show. They not only picked a gorgeous area to shoot a show, but the quality of the filming is absolutely insane. Definitely a huge step above the quality of Laguna Beach from back in the day.
They picked the perfect girl to mirror LC’s character. Madisson totally fits the girl next door look, is an absolute sweetheart, and dated Alex back in the day (just like Lauren & Steven’s little love story). Like LB, I wish SK had a bit more depth and more storylines.
I feel like the show would step up a notch if they allowed the viewers to get to know the characters a little more outside of their mini romantic connections. But, none-the-less, I know I will continue to be absolutely addicted to this show!
I FINALLY started to dive into this show after so many people recommended it to me over the years. While traveling on our honeymoon last year, I watched the first episode on the plane and laughed a bit, but didn’t really want to watch more. I actually recommended that my husband, Bobby, watch it and he immediately become addicted to the series.
This month my husband asked me again (after maybe 10 times this year) to try it out, so I did! Of course, Bobby was right. We’re both huge fans of The Office and Parks and Recreation. Arrested Development is just as funny and a bit more ridiculous, which is totally my sense of humor.
Tobias is definitely my favorite character. I find myself loosing it with almost ever scene that he is in because his character is so ridiculous and dramatic. And I mean… come on… his name alone and the way he dresses is comedy in itself. I am excited to continue to watch the rest of the series. But, I am sad to know the show was cancelled years ago!
I only have about 50 pages left in Big Little Lies and I am excited to finish reading it this week! I must be honest, I was not a fan of the book until I was more than halfway through. Like I said in the past, I didn’t want another Gone Girl mistake (I stopped reading that one right before he opened the shed because I was bored!).
So, I stuck with everyone’s recommendations to push through and I recently hit the “OMG” moment. Wow. I was truly surprised to find out what actually happened during Trivia Night and I am now waiting to see the aftermath. The character development was a bit slow in this book, so that’s what made my interest slip a bit as I read. But, there are so many character lines and interconnected stories to explain. So, I guess it was necessary.
I am looking forward to watching the TV series once I finish! People have told me the show is absolutely a must-watch and that it compliments the book greatly. Let me know if you have any recommendations for other books I should read next! It gets hard to read for pleasure once I am teaching, but I always find a way to squeeze them in here and there for my own sanity.
We had a CRAZY and sudden wind storm this month when our umbrella was open on my patio. It lifted out of the table and slammed into my neighbors’ fence…snapping three of the wooden legs. I was really bummed because it was a beautiful Pier 1 umbrella that was a gift from my MIL. But, this one is almost identical, is SO cheap, and I love the tilting feature!
These counter stools just came in last night and I am OBSESSED! They are going to be used at our kitchen island once the counters are installed tomorrow. We are going for a modern-style with mixed chrome and gold throughout our living area house. So, these are going to fit in perfectly! And… come on… they freakin’ SWIVEL! They come in silver or gold.
I am a huge fan of Taylor. Whether you like her or not, you have to admit that her marketing strategies were absolutely on-point recently. Barely photographed since June. Deleted everything from her website and social media with no mention prior. The creepy, cryptic snake videos starting the day of the eclipse. And… of course, her recent release of her newest single and video, “Look What You Made Me Do.”
To be honest, I am disappointed with her singing in this single. I don’t think it highlights what her voice can do at all. But, the metaphors and symbols hidden within her lyrics are MIND BLOWING. They are such a boss response to her greatest haters out there that are so jealous of her immense success in the industry.
Keep it up Taylor. Cannot WAIT for your next concert and your November album release!
