Welcome back to the Lovely Things series!
I cannot believe another month has gone by. It would be nice if time would s l o w d o w n a bit. I only have a little over a month until I have to go back to teaching. Summer is my favorite season! I love all of the hot, humid, sunniness that comes along with the summer months. Being at home has been rejuvenating and so, so needed for me.
Here are some of my favorite things from this beautifully humid July:
Now, if you know me, you know I am a massive television fan. Yep. Movies don’t really do it for me. I can’t even say it is an attention-thing because I can binge TV shows for hours on end! So, being home this summer has allowed me to catch up on recorded shows that have been sitting in my DVR folder. Also, I was able to start watching a new show (that I am seriously obsessed with at the moment).
Pretty Little Liars
I have been following the addictive and overdramatic Pretty Little Liars show since it debuted in 2010 when I was a junior in college. The last episode left me in TEARS! Anyone else? I get this way every time a show I love ends. I even remembering tearing up when Parks and Recreation ended… (I have a problem).
Weirdly enough, the ridiculous, never-ending plot made me feel as if I knew each Pretty Little Liar. I almost felt like they were going to trick the viewers and bring in another new “A” to keep all the drama trucking along. Although, I must admit, the ending was lame. For some reason the director rushed the timeline along and jammed Alex into only a couple of episodes (I thought that should have been a season in itself).
Also, I’m not sure why the director thought the average 23-24 year-old is desperately trying to get pregnant. The fact Aria immediately wanted to look into adoption right after their honeymoon?… come on. For me, that made the ending SO unrealistic and the acting seemed subpar. Oh, and the ending with Addison, the Alison look-alike, and her friends in the barn was stretching it a little. Did they really need to add that?
Even with all of those critiques… Pretty Little Liars was a fantastic show that kept me entertained until the very end. I will miss it very much and I look forward to seeing those talented actresses in other great roles in the future.
Bobby and I caught up on all of the episodes of Orange is the New Black this week. Although I don’t think this was the best season (I still think Season 1 takes the cake), WOW this one was informative. Ok, all aspects didn’t seem realistic—like Piscatella’s storyline. But, this season got Bobby and I to think a lot more about what it must be like for people in prison. It’s sad to think that many humans are possibly being treated so poorly in jails and prisons across the country.
I never thought OITNB would bring out the emotion in me that it did this season. I genuinely felt horrible and teared up multiple times when the women discussed and fought for Poussey. Watching the characters try to bring her justice reminds viewers that, although most people in prison have done wrong, they are still humans. They have feelings and rights that should not be put aside just because they are denied their freedom for a period of time.
Honestly, though… times ticking and this show might have one or two seasons to go. At this point, it’s getting a little played out. Also, I have no clue where they will go from here with how the last season ended. Not sure how they’ll film with the women all spread around different prisons (or, at least that’s what they made it look like). Who knows!?
OK! This is my latest TV addiction. People have been telling me to watch this show for months and I kept putting it off. But, I binged this bad boy in one week! I think it’s because each episode is 20 minutes long. Makes it easy for me to say to myself, “Ok, ok, ok… one more!” They end each episode with a cliff-hanger, which feeds my need for more, more, more each time.
I must admit that the first two seasons were… ehhhh, ok. The acting is a B- at best and the storyline is insanely predictable, which definitely annoyed me for a while. But, the main character, Liza, is such a train wreck and you just want to know how it all pans out. Also, let’s be real, we all watch it to see if she ends up with Josh.
Season 3 definitely included better acting and was not as predictable. For me, the shows picked up when one lame, annoying character was killed off (won’t give it away!). I am all caught up with the episodes, so far, in season 4. Wow, things get real and her life is beginning to unravel in so many ways! Cannot wait till this Wednesday for the next one to air!
We are super excited to announce that we have an official start date for our kitchen construction! Everything is going to begin this Wednesday. We plan to do a complete kitchen remodel with new everything: flooring, cabinets, an island, appliances, and a new sliding glass door. Read my post from last month to see how easy it is to choose and order cabinets on your own through The Home Depot to save yourself money here. Two walls are completely coming down and we are moving into the middle of 2017 with an open room concept (woo!).
Bobby seems most excited to have a dishwasher. We have been without one for the first two years living here, which has been lame. It’s amazing how many dishes pile up with only two people living here every single day. Although, I am excited for our sink, too! We are doing a dropdown sink that hide the edges underneath the countertop.
I am mostly dreaming about how much space I am going to have to cook and the amount of areas I will have to store and organize everything in our kitchen. Right now, if Bobby is even in the kitchen while I am cooking, I get SO irritated due to lack of space. I can’t wait to share our before and after photos! I am sure I will have a lot of pros and cons to share along the way to help you prepare for your own kitchen remodel in the future.
Here is a sneak-peek of our flooring and countertops:
Long Island Summer
Bobby and I actually just got back from the beach as I write this today (Sunday). Since last summer, we have made it a tradition to try to get to the beach one day each weekend of the summer. We miss a few here and there due to weddings and such, but we have been pretty loyal to the pact this year!
Like anywhere you live, you often forget about the special parts of your area that other people travel far from just to see for a few days. While sitting at the beach today, we looked around and noticed a few people that were clearly foreigners and came all the way to Long Island just to enjoy our beaches. We live about 7 minutes from Long Island’s most popular beach. Really, I am so grateful and blessed to be so close.
We have found our favorite spots on the beach where we hardly ever have to deal with a crowd. It’s nice to go with a few friends here and there. But, when Bobby and I just go alone, it is like being on vacation without having to spend all the money. Just listening to the waves, watching my husband bob around in the water like a kid, and having a good book with me is all I really need on a summer weekend to be at peace with life!
Favorite Podcast Episodes
These were my 3 favorite podcast episodes in July:
- Nutrition, mindset, goal-setting, daily rituals, visualization
- Issues with fear, negative self-talk, helpful tools to use
- Relationship with wealth and how to bring more money into your life
Right now I am about a quarter in with reading Big Little Lies, by Liane Moriarty. I am not hooked quite yet, but it is at the point where things are starting to pick up. The first quarter was full of character development and it seems to jump around a bit time-wise, which is making me lose interest a bit. But, I was told to hold on!
I don’t want a repeat of Gone Girl. I stopped reading right before he opened the shed door (which is basically where it all gets good!). Didn’t realize this until I saw the movie. But, I refuse to watch the show Big Little Lies until I read every page of the book!
